Logistics Apprentice

“After studying, I found it hard to find a job in the field I wanted. Every role needed experience, but it’s hard to get that without having a job. That’s why an apprenticeship really appealed to me. With FCDO Services, I liked the fact that the apprenticeships are open to everyone, not just school leavers. At 27, I’m probably older than most people think an apprentice would be, but age doesn’t matter. Your Future Just Got Bigger applies to everyone.

I’m part of the logistics team and learning about every stage of how we deliver mail or goods securely to UK government customers in the UK and all around the world – from goods being received and checked, to preparing them for dispatch to their final destination. It’s a warehouse role – but it’s not like any other warehouse you would work in. It’s been an eye-opening experience and I’ve done things I never would have imagined.

I work with a very supportive team who I know I can go to if I have any questions. I have regular meetings with managers and I’ve also been included in wider projects, so I can see how the whole Logistics function works.

FCDO Services teach you everything, helping to fully prepare you for a permanent role. You get to learn about every department and see what everyone does, across a variety of teams. You begin to understand the whole process, so you have more appreciation for how it all ties together.

Being able to see what FCDO Services do is amazing. I’m so glad I’ve taken this path, even if it’s not the usual step. One of my colleagues was 50 when he did his apprenticeship. It’s nice to see that it’s open to everyone. It can massively open up opportunities for your future. Age, gender, background – it doesn’t matter.

Once you complete your apprenticeship, the learning doesn’t stop. There are many future career pathways that become available to you, across the organisation – and there are even opportunities to switch discipline along the line. Knowing that career progression is both possible and encouraged is reassuring.

The apprenticeship has given me the knowledge I need in my desired field. And the practical work gives me a strong understanding of the processes. Once my apprenticeship is completed, I know I’ll most likely have a full-time job – and this is an organisation I plan to stay with for a long time."
