Former Technical Engineering Apprentice

The best thing about my apprenticeship was getting to travel to pretty much any country in the world. Before joining FCDO Services, I hadn’t even been on a plane for seven years. Today, as a Technical Installer, travel still plays a big part of my role – I’ve lost track of the number of flights I’ve been on. Where before I’d have found that quite daunting, I’m now a seasoned pro at navigating airports across the globe.

After completing my apprenticeship two years ago, I moved into a permanent role with the Technical Services Centre. It felt like a real achievement, and it spurred me on to keep learning and make sure I was producing the same top-quality work as everyone else in the team. Nowadays, you’ll find me helping team leaders however I can, improving my knowledge and skills, and working towards taking on more leadership responsibility.

Show a genuine interest in what you do, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

I picked up a lot of great advice throughout my apprenticeship: make sure that you get to know everybody, because having a lot of contacts is only a good thing. Show a genuine interest in what you do, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Plus, don’t worry about doing something wrong, it’s how you learn – and everyone understands that. And remember, working hard and pushing yourself will always pay off.

There’s so much opportunity – and support – to find the role that’s perfect for you.

Five years of working here has taught me a lot, and I genuinely can’t imagine a career anywhere else. But if you do want to explore different paths within FCDO Services, there’s so much opportunity – and support – to find the role that’s perfect for you.
